Jewelry Care You Can Do at Home

3 min read

Most of the dullness people bring to us is not damage — it is lotion, soap and sunscreen sitting behind the stone. Ten minutes at your kitchen sink fixes it.

The safe home clean

Warm water, a drop of plain dish soap, and a soft toothbrush. Soak for ten minutes, brush gently behind the stone where the film builds up, rinse and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. That is it.

What to avoid

Skip bleach, chlorine and ammonia — they attack alloys in gold and can pit the metal. Keep pearls, opals and emeralds out of ultrasonic cleaners entirely; they are porous or included and can crack.

Everyday habits

Jewelry on last, jewelry off first. Take rings off before the gym, the pool and yard work. Store pieces separately so diamonds do not scratch softer stones and chains do not tangle.

When to bring it in

Have prongs checked twice a year — a stone that wobbles when you tap it is a stone about to be lost. Cleaning and inspection are free at our counter, no appointment needed.
