Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: What to Know

4 min read

Both are real diamonds. Both are pure crystallized carbon, both test as diamond, and both sparkle the same way in the sunlight. The difference is where they came from — and what that means for your budget.

They are chemically identical

A lab-grown diamond is not a simulant. It is not cubic zirconia or moissanite. It has the same hardness, the same refractive index and the same fire as a mined stone. A jeweler needs specialized equipment to tell them apart.

The price difference is real

Lab-grown stones typically cost significantly less per carat. For the same budget you can often step up in size, in clarity or in cut quality — or keep the stone the same and put the difference toward the setting.

Value over time

Natural diamonds have a long history of holding resale value; lab-grown pricing has been falling as production expands. If you think of the ring as an heirloom to pass down, that matters. If you think of it as something to wear and love, it may not.

How to choose

There is no wrong answer. We put both options in your hand, tell you what each one costs and why, and let you decide without a sales pitch. Come look at them side by side in the showroom.
